About the event

We are honored to invite you to the Symposium devoted to the 100th anniversary of the birth of Professor Zdzisław Pawlak (10 Nov 1926 – 7 Apr 2006), the founder of Rough Sets, one of the fathers of Computer Science in Poland, and one of those great scientists who inspired many generations of followers worldwide. The Symposium is co-organized by the Warsaw University of Technology (where Professor Pawlak served as the Director of the Institute of Computer Science in the years 1989-1996) and the Polish Society of Artificial Intelligence (in recognition of substantial contributions of Professor Pawlak to the area of AI), under the patronage of the International Rough Set Society.

A commemorative presentation on Prof. Pawlak by Andrzej Skowron from 2007, updated in 2026, and extended biography are available here:

The Symposium

The main goal of the Symposium is to commemorate the life and scientific journey of Professor Pawlak, as well as to discuss how his revolutionary ideas related to the fields of Decision Logic, Conflict Analysis, Information Retrieval, Information Systems, and many others can inspire us today, from the viewpoint of the currently observed rapid progress in AI and Information Technology.

The Symposium is co-located with the Rough Set School coordinated by the International Rough Set Society with the aim of disseminating simple, intuitive, and powerful principles of the Rough Set Theory, which is easy to combine in applications with other approaches to Data Intelligence, Uncertainty Modeling, and more.

You can register for both the Symposium and the Rough Set School free of charge, either onsite or online (registration is required via registration form; the number of onsite participants is limited – please register as soon as possible). The talks will be delivered in English. The intended hours are 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM.

The joint program of the Symposium and the Rough Set School includes, in chronological order:

  1. The Rough Set School lectures (in the morning, available for the registered Rough Set School participants): Two overview talks on the rough set principles and foundations, as well as on rough-set-inspired applications in Data Science and Knowledge Discovery;
  2. The Symposium Opening Ceremony and the Keynote Lecture (available for the registered Symposium participants and the registered Rough Set School participants): Discussing the current trends in AI and Computer Science in relation to the selected scientific contributions of Professor Pawlak;
  3. Lunch Break (lunch available for the registered onsite Symposium participants);
  4. The Commemorative Session (available for the registered Symposium participants): Memories of distinguished scientists who knew Professor Pawlak in person, connecting from different parts of the world, including America, Asia, and Europe;
  5. The Panel Discussion (available for the registered Symposium participants): On how the original theories and ideas of Professor Pawlak can be adapted to solve the current challenges of AI, Machine Learning, and Computer Science in general;
  6. The Presentations Session (available for the registered Symposium participants): Short talks reflecting the most recent scientific results and industry applications in the fields that Professor Pawlak focused on.
